Li Fangyao is a Ph.D. candidate of Medieval Chinese history at Peking University. Her dissertation focuses on the tremendous capital of the Sui-Tang Dynasties, Chang’an. Through the investigation of several works about Chang’an, she intends to explore the social context of these authors and their books, that is, the relationship of Chang’an, the authors and their writing. The dissertation is an endeavor with interdisciplinary methodologies, such as urban study, art history and book history. A diversity of disciplines, a global perspective and a reflective way of thinking at the Harvard Yenching Institute will greatly help her to accomplish this theme.
