Explaining the Rise of China: a Challenge to Western Social Science Theories?
On April 5, 2010, HYI organized a roundtable which brought together an inter-disciplinary group of distinguished international scholars -- from China, Japan, Germany and the United States -- to offer their perspectives on explaining China?s stunning economic record and continued political stability decades after most other Communist systems in the world collapsed.
Chinese Philosophy Workshops
On March 19-21, 2010 the workshops "What is Chinese Philosophy? Four Expositions on its Characteristics by Scholars from National Taiwan University" and "International Workshop on the Research of Chinese Philosophy in Japan and Taiwan: With Critical Retrospections and future Prospects" were held at Harvard, organized by HYI Visiting Scholar SATO Masayuki.
HYI-CASS Joint Training Program on Grassroots Society and Popular Culture
HYI's second training
program, co-organized with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was launched
in January 2010. The goal of the program is to encourage cutting-edge
comparative research and study of grassroots society, and to promote scholarly
exchange amongst academics in China, America and the world.
2009 Holiday Party
On December 18, 2009, HYI held its annual Holiday Party to celebrate the end
of the semester and to thank those who have helped the Institute throughout
the year.
HYI Alumni Conference Photos
Alumni of the
Harvard-Yenching Institute recently held a HYI Alumni Conference
in Beijing, China from October 31-November 2, 2009. This year's topic was
'Multiple Perspectives on the Meaning of Community and Citizenship'.
Fall 2009 Receptions
To welcome
this academic year's new visiting scholars and fellows, HYI hosted a series of
welcoming events and receptions, including a luncheon at Upstairs on the Square
on September 1, a BBQ picnic behind 2 Divinity on September 4, and an opening
reception at the Harvard Faculty Club on September 10.
Tu Weiming Reception
On June 8, 2009, members of the Harvard community gathered for a reception to honor former Director Tu Weiming and to unveil his official HYI Director's Portrait, now on display in the HYI office corridor. Following the reception was a talk by William Chittick, Sachiko Murata and Tu Weiming on "Islamic Philosophy in Confucian Terms: the Sage Learning of Liu Zhi" (ca. 1670-1724).
Annual HYI Picnic
To celebrate the end of the academic year, HYI scholars, fellows, staff and families enjoyed an outdoor springtime picnic on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Lunar New Year 2009
On
January 23, 2009 the Harvard-Yenching Institute held its annual Lunar New
Year's party at Vanserg Hall. Scholars, their families and HYI staff all
gathered to celebrate the Year of the Ox.
Thanksgiving 2008
On
November 24, the Harvard-Yenching Institute held its annual Thanksgiving
(Potluck) Dinner at Vanserg Building. More than 70 visiting scholars,
fellows, associates and their family members in residence participated in
this grand gathering of the entire HYI community. Happy Holiday
Everybody!
Halloween 2008
On October 30,
2008, HYI visiting scholars, fellows and associates and their family
members are invited to attend the Institute's annual Halloween Pumpkin
Carving Party at Vanserg Building. Our sincere thanks go to Elaine for
organizing such a wonderful event!
Plymouth Plantation
On October 26, 2008, the Institute invited all visting scholars, fellows
and associates to a nice trip to the Plimouth Planatation in Plymouth,
MA.
Perry Talk
On October 10,
2008, scholars, fellows and associates of the Harvard-Yenching Institute
attended a lunch time talk given by Professor Elizabeth J. Perry, Director
of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, on her current research project. The
talk is titled "Anyuan (安�): Mining China's Revolutionary Tradition".
Duck Tour
On September 1, 2008,
the Institute held its annual "Labor Day Duck Tour". About 80 scholars,
fellows and doctoral students affiliated with the Institute and their
family members participated in this event. After the Duck Tour, a lobster
luncheon was held at Legal Seafood in Copley Square.
HFC Lunch
On September 2, 2008,
the Institute invited new visiting scholars, visiting fellows, associates
and doctoral students to the annual welcoming lunch at the Harvard Faculty
Club.
