SEARCH HYI

Welcome to the HYI webpage! I am now working on the HYI Alumni database and in order to complete the first phase of that project, I would like to update as many email addresses of former HYI scholars as possible. So, if you were a scholar at HYI, please help me by sending me an email (ssalpert@fas.harvard.edu) and help spread the word to other HYI alumni by asking them to do the same. Thank you.

Doctoral Scholars Program
The Harvard-Yenching Institute's Doctoral Scholars Program consists of two branches, namely Harvard-DSP and Non-Harvard DSP.

Harvard-Doctoral Scholars Program (HDSP)
Each year HYI invites Harvard departments in the humanities and social sciences to nominate candidates for the HDSP scholarship. Although not necessarily faculty members or researchers, these candidates must be from Asia. The candidates are selected from the pool of applicants for the departments' graduate programs and nominated to HYI for funding. The candidates' applications will be presented to a selection committee consisting of Harvard faculty for consideration. Scholarships are given for a period of one academic year, and are renewable for a total grant of up to three-and-a-half years. Annual renewal depends on satisfactory progress toward a degree and the availability of funds.

HDSP grantees are trained in different departments, such as Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Committee of History and East Asian Languages, Department of Anthropology, Department of History of Art and Architecture, Department of Sociology, and Committee on the Study of Religion.

Non-Harvard-Doctoral Scholars Program (DSP)
This program allows junior faculty members and researchers of universities and research institutes affiliated with HYI to study abroad for a Ph.D. in the humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on culture at one of the major universities in the United States and other countries.

Applications for the institute's scholarships are separate from applications for admission to graduate programs. Candidates must apply directly to the admission offices of the universities of their choice. The institute's application is only for financial assistance.

Nominees must register for the TOEFL and GRE tests by September 1. The deadline for the receipt of DSP applications at the HYI is June 15. Applicants may update the list of their desired universities, revise their study plans, and furnish more supporting documents until September 1. HYI representatives will conduct interviews with nominated applicants at their home institutions by between August and November of the same year.

Scholarship applications sent directly to the Institute without official approval by the applicant's institution will not be considered. Several DSP grantees have attended major universities in the United States, such as Columbia University, Cornell University, University of Chicago, Brown University, Indiana University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and University of Washington. Other DSP grantees have studied for their degree in countries other than the United States, such as England (Institute of Archaeology, University College London, Leeds University, London School of Economics and Political Science), Canada (University of Toronto), Australia (Australian National University, La Trobe University).

Frequently Asked Questions:

I have earned my MA degree from an American university (or an English-speaking university); do I still have to submit my TOEFL and GRE scores?
Depending on which universities you are going to apply for, you will be required to submit your latest TOEFL and GRE scores to the universities' admission committee. Based on your scores of these two tests, HYI selection committee can judge whether you are ready for graduate studies in an English speaking country. If you have earned a MA degree from an English-speaking university, AND the universities of your choice for doctoral studies can waive these test scores for you, you are exempt from the submission of the test scores to HYI. Otherwise, HYI will need your scores.

Where can I get the HYI DSP application form? And where can I submit it?
Only applicants whose universities are affiliated with HYI are eligible to apply and should contact their International or Foreign Affairs Office for information and an application.. You must submit your application through the international office for official approval and nomination.
