SUMMARY:Cattle\, Corn\, and Critters: Eating and Being Eaten in the Borderl
 and
DESCRIPTION:The borderland between Myanmar and Thailand\, whilst chiefly kn
own for its porosity and ethnic armed conflict\, has become part of Southe
ast Asia’s wider plantation frontier (e.g. &amp\; Kenny-Lazar and Ishika
wa\, 2019). Corn plantations stretch along its undulating hills\, as protr
acted conflict\, cheap land\, displacement\, and migrant labor have create
d favorable conditions for agribusinesses. Rather than looking at macro-sc
ale frontier (geo)politics\, resource extraction/exploitation as often asc
ribed to the Plantationocene\, this talk aims to shed light on how everyda
y life bordering practices become processes of biological negotiation. Tak
ing a multispecies angle to how corn cultivation\, cattle feed\, ethnic co
nflict\, and invasive pests such as the corn armyworm are entangled in thi
s borderland\, it invites us to look at borderlands through metabolic rela
 tions and material transformation.
