SUMMARY:Factions in Flux: Intergroup Collaboration and Conflict in the Red
 Guard Movement
DESCRIPTION:**Please note the date change**\n\nCo-sponsored by the Fairbank
Center for Chinese Studies\n\nStudents of social movements and collective
action have traditionally concentrated on the structural factors influenc
ing group formation during social mobilization. This conventional model de
picts members of opposing factions as pursuing collective interests that a
re predetermined by their existing social positions\, leading to well-defi
ned political alliances with fixed objectives and unwavering identities. H
owever\, during periods of radical instability\, political ambiguity and c
ontingency often disrupt the rigidity of these established models of mobil
ization. Drawing from a detailed examination of popular uprisings and fact
ional contention in Guangzhou City and Haifeng County during the years 196
6-1968 with the more abundant sources available today\, this study identif
ies two critical mechanisms—namely\, contextual ambiguity and adaptive c
hoice—that serve as intermediaries in shaping political alignments in mo
ments of radical change. It is argued that within rapidly changing and amb
iguous political environments\, the process of group formation is predomin
antly driven by emerging interests as factional struggles evolve\, rather
than being firmly rooted in pre-existing social antagonisms. Throughout th
is dynamic process\, new political identities emerge\, and political inter
ests are continuously redefined\, often giving rise to violent conflicts o
 f increasing magnitude and influence.
