Yan Liu is a Professor of Linguistics at Minzu University of China. Her research centers on the phonetics and phonology of China’s ethnic minority languages, with particular expertise in Austroasiatic languages. She is the author of several books, including A Study on Tonogenesis in Mon-Khmer Languages, An Experimental Study of Chinese Tone and Intonation Acquisition by Speakers of Toneless Ethnic Minority Languages in China, and Phonetic Archives of Chinese Minority Languages (Revised Edition).

Her current work examines the phonetic and phonological features of Austroasiatic languages, their areal distribution, and the relationship between these characteristics and language evolution.
