About the book: This volume brings together Chinese translations of Charles Sanders Peirce’s writings on signs and meaning, drawn from published essays, manuscripts, lectures, and correspondence. It is the outcome of textual research and editorial work: the materials have been selected, collated, organized, translated, and annotated to form a collection that Peirce himself never assembled as a single book.
The texts are grouped by theoretical topic and arranged chronologically within each group. This structure allows readers to follow a particular question across different periods of Peirce’s work while keeping its relation to the broader theory in view. Dates, manuscript numbers, and references to published editions provide a route back to the sources and support comparison between texts that originated in different contexts.
A central concern of the edition is to preserve the historical development of Peirce’s semiotics. His changing terminology, revised classifications of signs, and successive reformulations remain visible in the selected texts. The juxtaposition of published works with exploratory drafts and letters shows how concepts emerged and were reconsidered over time. The book offers a resource for research in semiotics, philosophy, communication, and the study of meaning.
About the editor and translator: Zhao Xingzhi is Professor of English at Sichuan University and was a Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar in 2021–22. He serves as Executive Editor of Signs & Media. His research focuses on Peircean semiotics, theories of meaning, cultural studies, and semiosis in digital media.
