Xinrong Ma is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Sun Yat-sen University. She obtained her doctor degree from Chinese studies at the Institute of Area Studies, Leiden University, the Netherlands. Her research interest includes migration, labor, ethnicity, citizenship and (de-)globalization. Her publications appeared in English and Chinese peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, China Information, the China Review and Journal of Chinese Governance etc. Her monograph Entrapment by Consent: the brokerage of Liangshan Yi labor migration in China focuses on ethnic Yi rural-urban migration and ethnic politics at grass-roots levels in China. Currently she pays attention to irregular and labor migration between China and others Global South Countries. During her stay at HYI, she is conducting the project on “precariousness and migration control: irregular migrant workers from Southeast Asia to China”.
