Dr Haiyan Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, at the University of Macau. She holds a Ph.D. from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, an MA from the University of Westminster (UK), and a BA from Fudan University in Shanghai.
Before joining the Harvard-Yenching Institute, she was awarded several prestigious fellowships, including the Reuters Institute Fellowship at the University of Oxford and the Australian Endeavour Fellowship at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on media, journalism, and social change, with expertise in media-market-state relations, digitalization of journalism, digital media and culture, women and media, and the evolving roles of journalists and intellectuals in professional and societal contexts.
She is the author of Disrupting Chinese Journalism: Changing Politics, Economics, and Journalistic Practices of the Legacy Newspaper Press (Routledge, 2023) and The Transformation of Investigative Journalism in China: From Journalists to Activists (Lexington Books, 2016). Her work has been published in leading international journals, including Journal of Communication, Media Culture & Society, Discourse Context & Media, Journalism, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, International Journal of Communication, Asian Journal of Communication, Chinese Journal of Communication, Feminist Media Studies, and Javnost-The Public, among others.
