This is a book presenting an alternative intellectual history of China in the twentieth century through nine dialogues between Professor Tang Xiaobing and other prominent scholars including Yü Ying-shih, Qian Liqun, Yang Guoqiang, and Wang Fan-sen. They together, with diverse concerns and perspectives, probe the core threads of China’s history and thought in the twentieth century. China experienced the transformation from the imperial examination system to enlightenment and then to revolution, from scholar-officials to intellectuals, from the mass to the public. These free-flowing and impassioned dialogues not only present the academic horizons and pluralistic spectrums of intellectual history researchers but also, through the form of dialogue, incorporate each participant’s life experiences, thereby recapturing the scene of intellectual exercise and knowledge production.
