Special Short-term Associate Program (2021-22)

Overview

The Special Short-term Associate Program is limited to past Harvard-Yenching Institute grantees who are currently affiliated with an academic institution in Asia as full-time faculty or researchers. The program is designed to provide an opportunity for past affiliates of the Harvard-Yenching Institute to return to Harvard for 3 to 6 months (if travel conditions permit) with funding support from the Harvard-Yenching Institute, to conduct new or additional research in their respective fields.  HYI Associates are expected to conduct independent research in a self-sufficient manner on their proposed project.

Scholars from academic years 2019-20 and 2020-21 will receive priority for this special grant.

Terms and Conditions

The minimum research term of a HYI Associate is three months. The duration of stay is no more than 6 months. If travel conditions permit, scholars will be in residence at Harvard University during the spring semester and summer of 2022. Possible dates of stay are from February 1, 2022 through August 31, 2022.

This HYI short-term fellowship consists of the following:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Round-trip economy airfare between your home institution and Boston
  • Health insurance for the individual scholar

The Harvard-Yenching Institute will also provide visa sponsorship according to the guidelines set out by the Harvard International Office (more information on these guidelines). Scholars will be provided with University and library access during their stay.

We hope that scholars will be able to come to Harvard’s campus by the spring semester 2022. The fellowship is contingent upon scholars being able to be in residence at Harvard in 2022. Deferral of the fellowship is not possible.

This program is limited to past Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholars, Visiting Fellows, Training Program fellowship recipients, and Doctoral Scholars. Applicants must be currently affiliated with an academic institution in Asia as full-time faculty or researchers.
