“Prospective and Retrospective: HYI’s Eventful Century” – An Interview with Elizabeth Perry

A Chinese-language interview with former HYI Director Prof. Elizabeth J. Perry (which took place during the final year of her directorship in 2024), entitled “回顾与展望：哈佛燕京学社的百年沉浮” (Prospective and Retrospective: The Harvard-Yenching Institute’s Eventful Century) has been published in the Journal of Modern Chinese History, Issue 32 (《近代史学刊》第32辑), by the Social Science Academic Press (China), 2025. The interview was conducted by Dr. Helin Wu (HYI Indian Studies in China Program Visiting Scholar, 2023-24).

Dr. Wu’s interview with Professor Perry, then Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, highlights HYI’s century-long support for Asian humanities and social sciences, its evolving programs across Asia, renewed ties with Central China Normal University, and Prof. Perry’s vision for cross-disciplinary research.
