Gao Bingzhong (Ph.D in folklore, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, 1991) is Professor of Anthropology, Department of Sociology, and Director of Center for Civil Society Studies, Peking University. He is also Vice President of China Folklore Society and a member of Expert Committee of Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, China. Peking University. Gao Bingzhong’s professional research interests are focused around three main avenues: the development of civil society in China, the everyday life of ordinary people, and the institutional efforts to conduct overseas ethnography. His publications include Bluebook of Chinese Civil Society Development 2008 (Zhongguo Gongmin Shehui Fazhan Lanpishu, co-ed. with Ruijun Yuan), Beijing: Peking University Press 2008 and Folk Culture and Civil Society: Cultural Studies of Modern Process in China (Minjian Wenhua yu Gongmin Shehui: Zhongguo Xiandai Licheng de Wenhua Yanjiu), Beijing: Peking University Press, 2008.
