Gu Zheng was born in 1959 in Shanghai and received his Ph.D. from Osaka Prefecture University (1998), Japan. He is now a Professor at Fudan University’s School of Journalism and also Vice-Director of the Research Center for Visual Culture there. Zheng’s research fields include the history of Chinese photography, Chinese contemporary photography, and 20th century avant-garde art. During his stay at Harvard, Zheng will focus on the visual turn in the political mobilization of the masses, with Sha Fei’s Jin-Cha-Ji Pictorial as a case study.
