Guanli Zhang is Associate Professor in the School of Sociology at Beijing Normal University. He received his DPhil from University of Oxford in 2019. Before joining Beijing Normal University, he was a post-doctoral fellow at Tsinghua University. His research examines gender, family, migration, environmental health, and poverty in contemporary China. Drawing primarily on qualitative and ethnographic methods, he has conducted long-term fieldwork in both rural and urban China, including Zhejiang, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Beijing. His work is particularly concerned with the lived experiences of ordinary people and marginalized groups, and explores how social inequalities are produced, experienced, and negotiated in everyday life. At the Harvard-Yenching Institute, he is working on a project that investigates patriarchy, intimacy, and masculinity in matrilocal marriages (赘婚) of contemporary China.
