Hong Wei is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Science, Technology and Society at Tsinghua University. Her research papers on laboratory ethnography, knowledge transfer, and social networks of Chinese scientists have appeared in Social Studies of Science, Research Policy, and Science, Technology & Human Values. Recently, she has been engaged in collaborative ethnographic studies on outdoor and indoor air pollution in China. From September 2017 to May 2018, she led a team that followed a clean stove project in Yan’an in order to observe how rural families react to new technologies that help monitor and improve their indoor air quality, and whether they will develop a lay epistemology of air pollution that is compatible with modern society. During her stay at HYI, she will be writing a book based on the visual and textual ethnography produced by the team. Part of the visual material has already been edited into a short documentary film.
