Jaran Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied English Linguistics and Translation Studies at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea. She previously served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics at UMass Boston. Her research investigates the ideological and symbolic power surrounding language, culture, and identity, with a specific focus on minoritized youth. She is the author of the monograph “Expanding ecological approaches to language, culture and identity: Politics and power in South Korean multicultural youths’ experiences” (Routledge, 2024). At the Harvard-Yenching Institute, she will explore the complex interplay of ethnic nationalism, raciolinguistic ideologies, and familial language practices within South Korean damunhwa families to understand how mixed-heritage children navigate identity formation and resist structural marginalization in a non-White setting.
