Ryan Xin Xie is a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on the intersections of urban wildness, power/knowledge, embodied cognition, and human-animal relations in urban China. Her dissertation, titled “Animating Hong Kong: urban wildlife, contested knowledge, and multispecies cohabitation,” combines ethnographic and archival research to examine human-snake relations within the nexus of urban wildlife conservation, Chinese pharmaceutical tradition, environmental data infrastructure, and ecotourism. Her research has been supported by grants from l’Institute Franco-Chinoise de Lyon, Lee-Hysan Foundation, the University of Hong Kong, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
