Saranya Choochotkaew is an Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies, in the Department of Eastern Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.  She was granted the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, and earned her PhD in Japanese Studies from Osaka University in 2017. During graduate school, her research focused on Japanese Perception of Plants in Noh Plays, and Buddha’s Representation in Japanese Edo-period Sugoroku Games. Her research interests revolve around religious aspects in Edo-period entertainment, and plants in Japanese culture. During her residency at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, she will conduct research on Religion and Humor in Early Modern Japanese Literature, focusing on text and visual analysis of deity characters in Kibyōshi.
