Dr. Xiaoyan Xiao is a Professor at the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Xiamen University, China. Her research interests cover interpreting in both the signed and spoken modes, sign linguistics and Deaf studies. She has published extensively inside and outside China, including academic papers, monographs, sign language and interpreting textbooks (some of which have been recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Education for the National Curriculum). She is Deputy Chair of the Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) Committee of the Chinese National Association of the Deaf (NAD). She has been working closely with the NAD team to roll out a new Chinese national SLI certification test and the national standards for SLI services. Dr. Xiao has received a number of research grants, including grants from the Chinese National Social Sciences Foundation, the Chinese Disabled People’s Federation, and the EU Asia Link. For the HYI VS Program, she has conducted interviews and filmed Deaf employees from Chinese welfare factories and hopes to investigate their collective memories (1958-), their language (i.e., indigenous signing) and the evolution of a unique Deaf community.
