Shen Yang received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2016. He then took a postdoctoral and research position at the City University of Hong Kong. He is trained to be a comparative political scientist with special expertise in the politics of mainland China and Hong Kong. His research interests cover comparative politics, political communication, and contentious politics. More specifically, he is interested in the state-society relations, civil society, and internet politics in mainland China, and the political change and social movements in Hong Kong. His dissertation examines the political process of the Occupy Movement in Hong Kong that took place in 2014. During his stay at HYI, he will work on projects related to Chinese politics and mainland-Hong Kong relations. He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals including Law & Social Inquiry and Voluntas.
