About the story: This is a Hindi translation of a Chinese short-story “A Mad Hen”《痴鸡》(Chi ji/एक पागल मुर्गी ) written by Cao Wenxuan 曹文轩. In this short story, Cao Wenxuan tells the story of a hen who wants to ‘hatch eggs’ and her journey of motherhood. Combatting a variety of restrictions imposed by her owner and Mao Tou, the hen didn’t stop and had a bunch of chickens at the end. It is written as children/animal literature but also reflects upon the ‘one child policy’.

About the translator: Nishit Kumar was a HYI Chinese Studies in India Visiting Fellow from 2019-20.
