About the book: On the basis of the comprehensive collection and collation of unearthed chime-bells in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, this book combines some written materials such as Sanli literature, inscription, and bamboo and wooden slips with the method of comprehensive study and case study to establish the chronology sequence of the Eastern Zhou chime-bells system. Furthermore, it discusses the formation, development, and extinction process of the bronze chime-bells system in this period. It also tries to explore the differences between the “burial system” and “temple system” and some specific features of the ” suspended music system” to investigate the music system of the chime-bells of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty from the perspective of archaeology.

About the author: Wenjie Zhang was a HYI Visiting Scholar from 2019-20. He is a Professor and associate dean of the School of History and Cultural Heritage at Xiamen University, China. He received his Ph.D. in archaeology from the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University, China. His research focuses on the Zhou, Qin, and Han Dynasties, bronze wares, ritual system, music archaeology, and Prehistoric archaeology in southeast China. He directed some important field projects in China such as the excavations at Fujian, Beijing, Sichuan, Hubei, and Hunan Provinces. His latest research interest resides in the music system during the Zhou and Han Dynasties. His major publications include A Preliminary Examination of the Arrangement System of the Chime-bells in the Han Dynasty, The Retro style of the Bronzes in the Warring states Period, the Arrangements of the Chime-bells of the Zhou Dynasty in Burials and in Performance Occasions, the Periodization and Chronology of the Bronzes of the Chu System. He has had two experiences as a visiting scholar at Harvard University, one  from 2010-2011 and the other from Aug 2019 to May 2020 at HYI.
