Abstract: The compilation of the monumental historical dictionary OED demands the principles of consistency and accuracy. Some policies are therefore necessary to help carry out these principles. The essay discusses these policies on the basis of sample quotations from James Shirley and Wentworth Dillon, the fourth Earl of Roscommon.
