The Harvard-Yenching Library has recently acquired a photo album titled “Souvenir de Chine” (Photographs of Japanese occupation of Shanghai and Nanjing), consisting of 475 images from 1932 to 1937, capturing significant events during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and Nanjing. Compiled by a French individual, the album was presented to Hollington K. Tong 董显光 (1887-1971), a prominent journalist and diplomat. Tong, Deputy Minister of the Fifth Department of the National Military Committee during the Sino-Japanese War, later became Vice-Minister of Information, actively seeking Western media support for China’s resistance.
