Jimmy Chia-Shin Hsu is an Associate Research Professor of the Institutum Iurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He received his LL.B. from National Taiwan University, LL.M. from National Chengchi University, LL.M. and J.S.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. His research interests include legal philosophy, constitutional theory, comparative constitutional law, freedom of expression, and philosophy of punishment. His research at HYI will explore the philosophical framework that facilitates meaningful debates on capital punishment and its relations with human dignity and right to life, especially in an East Asian context. His other projects include a comparative study of judicial cases dealing with civil disobedience and public protests in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and a philosophical study on the roles of indignation, forgiveness, and remorse in the contexts of criminal and transitional justice.
