About the book: This book explores different interpretations and sentiments of the elderly toward landscape changes in a rural village, in the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. Focusing on four specific landscapes including: public spaces, houses, home gardens and sacred spaces, the book indicates that the elderly have both positive and negative evaluations on changes of each landscape. Their attitudes are influenced by their different interpretations of modernity values which are inscribed in each new landscape, and by their interactions and role taking in the process of constructing new symbols of the landscape.
